Barns are simply built, sturdy structures, and timber framing of a certain vintage is impressively durable. This remodel and addition to a modest house, in a rural corner of the Hamptons, salvages a heavy timber barn frame to create a soaring new family room. A smaller addition was added to create a large new master suite. The project’s material palette of weathered cedar and local stone, along with careful native landscaping, helps the old and new structures nicely coexist and feel at home on the verdant site.
